William Burbach
William "Bill" Burbach served as the Oregon Chapter President in 1973. Bill was noted for his passion and work recording stories about Spitznamen (Nicknames), holiday traditions and life in his ancestral village of Norka, Russia. Bill also created maps showing where German Russian families lived in Portland's Albina neighborhood. Bill was a quiet, gentle man who deeply loved his German Russian heritage and actively worked to preserve it.
Born William Howard Burbach on February 11, 1925 to parents William Burbach (born 1897 in Norka, Russia) and Elizabeth Müller (born 1900 in Norka). Bill's parents immigrated to the United States in June of 1912 and settled in Portland. After serving as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II, Bill married Constance Jean Southworth. Bill Burbach died on August 8, 2008 and was buried at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. He remained an active member of AHSGR to the end. |
